Sloth

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sloths are tree-dwelling mammals of the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They are so sluggish that algae grows on their fur, which helps them hide among the leaves.

★★★★★
I've tried a few vocabulary extensions, and this one is the best by far. Being able to highlight a word in any article and immediately get a flashcard with the exact sentence I found it in makes a massive difference for context.

The spaced repetition is really well calibrated. It asks me about difficult words right before they slip my mind. It has significantly improved my reading retention over the last couple of weeks.
Artur · Poland
★★★★★
Translation mode is incredibly convenient for reading foreign news. I can look up words and get definitions without constantly switching tabs or losing my place on the page.

I really appreciate the clean, no-bloat design. No annoying pop-ups, no dark patterns, and using it offline without creating an account is a huge plus for privacy. The CSV export is exactly what I needed.
Peter · Poland
★★★★★
It makes it seamless to move my saved words over to Anki, fitting into my existing study workflow without any hassle.

Straight answers.

Is it really free?

Yes. 20 cards with no sign-up, and 100 with a free account. No card asked for either way. The full dictionary and the complete spaced-repetition engine are included. Pro adds unlimited cards and lets you review anywhere, including on your phone.

Do I need to sign in?

Not to use it. Everything works on your computer without an account. A free account raises your limit to 500 cards and backs them up, so nothing is lost if your laptop is.

What data do you collect?

Nothing personal by default. If you turn on anonymous usage counts, we collect a random ID, extension version, browser family, and locale. That's it. If you sign in to sync your flashcards, your cards travel with your account and we use them only to power sync. We may look at anonymized totals across all users (like the most-saved words) to improve dictionary quality, but never anything tied back to you.

Do I have to configure AI to use it?

No, and most people never will. Vocalabs ships with 44,000 English definitions built in, and downloads a translation pack for your language the first time you set it up.

If your Chrome can run its own on-device model, Vocalabs uses it for anything the dictionary does not have: a technical term, a rare word, a name. It runs on your own computer, costs nothing, needs no account, and nothing you look up leaves the machine. Chrome downloads the model once and you choose when, from Settings.

An API key from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or OpenRouter stays available for people who want a definition written for their exact sentence. It is optional, and it is the only part that costs money.

Can I export my cards?

Yes. CSV export at any time. Compatible with Anki, Mochi, and any spreadsheet tool. Your data is always yours.

Which languages are supported?

Vocalabs is built for reading English. English definitions ship with the extension. Translations are being rolled out language by language, sixteen are ready now: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Indonesian and Turkish. Settings shows which are ready. Inflected forms are handled, so highlighting "was" gives you the entry for "be". If your language is not ready yet, definitions still work, and you can add an AI key for translations in the meantime.

Which browsers?

Vocalabs is a Chrome extension, which means it also works on Edge, Brave, Opera, and any other Chromium browser. Firefox support is planned.

Flashcards that stick.
